Kaiser Permanente Press Release
Aloha,
Since Tuesday evening, August 8, 2023, multiple wildfires whipped by hurricane-force winds on the Island of Maui have taken dozens of lives, injured many, devastated communities, and destroyed homes and businesses. The situation remains dynamic and fast-moving, many roads are blocked, and the full extent of the injuries and property damage may not be known for several days. What we do know is that the Maui community needs our care and support.
In the midst of all this, the people of Kaiser Permanente and Maui Health are rising to face this terrible disaster by delivering care, service, and comfort to those who need it. The physicians and staff at Maui Health have been treating people with burns, smoke inhalation, and other fire-related injuries since Tuesday night. Kaiser Permanente physicians and staff who worked at the Lahaina Clinic destroyed by the fire are relocating to other facilities where they can help support the community. We are augmenting our resources to increase care for the community in the days and months to come.
Ways to get care on Maui Island
- Members needing to make same-day or urgent care appointments can visit the Maui Lani Medical Office (55 Maui Lani Parkway, Wailuku, HI 96793) or schedule a phone, video, or e-visit via kp.org or through the KP mobile app. Members may also call to make an appointment or get 24/7 Advice at 1-833-833-3333 (TTY 711).
- The Wailuku Medical Office (80 Mahalani St, Wailuku, HI 96793) also remains open.
- For information on prescription refills members can visit kp.org/pharmacy or call 808-643-7979.
- For the latest updates regarding our clinics on Maui, visit kp.org/Hawaii or follow us on Instagram @kphawaii or Facebook @facebook.com/KPHawaii.
As part of our initial response and commitment to help our Maui community recover, effective immediately, we are extending the premium payment due date for 30 days for individuals and businesses impacted by the Maui wildfires. This is in effect for the next 30 days, and we continue to evaluate and determine later if it needs to be extended further.
- This is not a waiver of premium dues. Individual members and group customers remain financially liable for the premium amounts. This is an extension of the time to pay, and a suppression of termination of coverage due to delinquency.
- Any scheduled notices to terminate coverage for nonpayment in the month of August will be deferred for one month for individual members and group customers impacted by the fires on the Island of Maui.
- We will offer payment plans for any past due or August 2023 premium dues, including the ability to spread out the past due amount over a three-month duration.
Emergency Grants provided to American Red Cross of Hawaii, Maui Food Bank, and The Salvation Army of Hawaii
Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Maui Health will make an immediate donation of $300,000 as a first step to help our first responders with urgent needs. The donation will be split between 3 organizations: the American Red Cross of Hawaii, the Maui Food Bank, and the Salvation Army of Hawaii. Kaiser Permanente has also initiated an employee-giving program across all KP regions to immediately support these relief organizations. This is only a first step, and we are committed to Maui’s people and recovery for the long haul.
Kaiser Permanente’s Lahaina Clinic destroyed by Maui fires, Mobile Health Vehicle en route to help
Our Lahaina Clinic, located in the heart of the current devastation, was destroyed overnight Tuesday. We are transporting our new Mobile Health Vehicle to Maui to help those in need and expect it to be operational early next week.
